Hello. Greetings from Emina's. I'm Neil and a hail from the UK. So I made it to Otaru a few days ago. I was coming from Tokyo and decided to go the long way around, getting the ferry from Oaru to Tomakomai, taking just a little over a 19 hours. Few! Luckily the sea was calm and I could get a good nights sleep. To top things off, I was lucky enough to see two schools of dolphins swim towards the boat as we docked. Worth the wait in my opinion.
I'm going to be hanging out in Otaru for a week or so. There is a bit of everything for everyone here. Close by is Mt. Tengu, overlooking the city and a short walk from the hostel. I'm definitely going to check it out in the next few days. The city itself is very quaint, with many good places to shop and go for a coffee. I spent the afternoon yesterday sampling the local Otaru beer, sitting outside next to the canal. Very relaxing.
I'm trying to improve my Japanese while I'm here as well. Motoko suggested a good class to go to in the morning. It was free which was great and the teachers were very kind. At the hostel, Tomo-kun is very cute and always willing to talk with me. He's my Japanese Sensei!
Summer's a great time to come to Hokkaido, so hope you can make it along sometime. Neil.
