Hi guys, Neil again. I've been here for a week now enjoying the sights that Otaru has to offer.
A few days ago, Motoko, Tomo and I walked all the way to Mt. Tengu's cable car station only to find a vast cloud of fog covering the whole of the mountain. Oh well. We went back instead and enjoyed some drinks and snacks at a local Izakaya.
The next day I went back by myself and went up to the top by foot. It didn't take so long, and it gave me a chance to burn off the fried potato I had last night. You get a pretty good view from the top, seeing across the whole of Otaru bay and beyond. The mountain is also famous for the Tengu Goblin, a long nose, red faced creature who dwells on the top. If you touch his nose and make a wish your dream will come true. What did I wish for? Not telling. It's a secret!
I also went to Cape Takashima where you can find one of Otaru's Herring Mansions (Nishin Goten). Built in the late 19th century, this building was made for the local fisherman who were catching herring off the coast of Hokkaido. This is another nice spot for getting a good view of Otaru as well as there being a museum in the Herring Mansion and an aquarium near by. There is also a nice restaurant near by that serves all kinds of herring based dishes. I tried the herring don (fish on rice with side dishes). Very delicious.
Ok, better finish now. Motoko kindly let me use the TV to see the Wimbledon final last night, but it finished at 2.30am, so I'm a little sleepy. Time to take a nap... , er I mean clean the hostel. ;)
